UN Senior Appointments

UN Senior Appointments (.XSLX)

The UN Senior Appointments file contains detailed data on all appointees to Under-Secretary-General (USG) and Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) positions in 2015. This data includes order and month of appointment, and appointee name, nationality, and gender, among other information. This data begins with 2015 and will be regularly updated to reflect subsequent years’ appointments as data becomes available.


MISSION-YEAR

Wide: Mission-year (.xlsx) | Mission-year (.csv)

Long: Mission-year (.xlsx) | Mission-year (.csv)

Mission-year files contain data for personnel, fatalities, vehicles, aircraft, and expenditures, as well as breakdowns for each of these categories.

The "Wide" data file contains the same data plus some other mission descriptors like mission mandate dates, heads of mission, and founding resolutions.  It is organized as follows (naming variables across the top row):  Mission, Year, various descriptor variables for the mission, and variable names.  Please see the "Variable name translation" pdf at the bottom of this page for a guide to the variable names in the "Wide" data file.

The "Long" data file is organized as follows (naming variables across the top row): Mission, Year, various descriptor variables for the mission, variable type 1, variable subtype 2, variable subtype 3, and the value of that variable. This format works well with Tableau.


COUNTRY-MISSION-YEAR

Wide: Country-mission-year (.xlsx) | Country-mission-year (.csv)

Long: Country-mission-year (.xlsx) | Country-mission-year (.csv)

Country-mission-year files contain information on personnel and military units that have been contributed to missions by particular countries.

The "Wide" data file contains the same data plus some other mission descriptors like mission mandate dates, heads of mission, and founding resolutions.  It is organized as follows (naming variables across the top row):  Mission, Year, various descriptor variables for the mission, and variable names.  Please see the "Variable name translation" pdf at the bottom of this page for a guide to the variable names in the "Wide" data file.

The "Long" data file is organized as follows (naming variables across the top row): Mission, Year, various descriptor variables for the mission, variable type 1, variable subtype 2, combined variable name (describes type 1 and type 2 in one column), and the value of that variable.  This format works well with Tableau.


CIVILIAN OCCUPATIONS

Civilian Occupations (.xlsx)Civilian Occupations (.csv)

The Civilian Occupations file contains information on the types of positions held by civilian staff in each mission.  The data file is organized as follows (naming variables across the top row): Mission, Year, Job Type, and number of people working in that job type, as well as various mission descriptor variables.
